| May 10 | Kate | Recent mispronunciations of “Mothers’ Day” by Ruby: “Smothers Day”, “Murders Day”. Should I be worried about tomorrow? |
| May 11 | Steve | Orchestrating an alternately Ruby-intense and Ruby-free day for Kate. Just had french toast in bed; now it’s time to make ourselves scarce. |
| May 13 | Steve | We hung curtains in Ruby’s room yesterday. When I got home, instead of playing with her toys she spent a half hour opening and closing them. |
| May 14 | Kate | A damn heron apparently ate all the fish in our backyard pond! Steve saw no sign of them, and so Ruby had a first “losing a pet” experience. |
| May 15 | Kate | Ruby made up her first parody song this morning: “Stinko pinko little star, up above the poop.” I know it’s incomplete, but she’s only two! |
| May 20 | Kate | Ruby is more fragile than tissue paper today. Leaving the house is impossible so I gave up and we’re watching one of the few movies we have. |
| May 20 | Kate | Ruby milestone today: her 1st loud public comment about someone’s weight. “He has a big belly!” I ignored it & explained later it was rude. |
| May 21 | Kate | Waiting for the bus with Ruby, heading to the Central Library to check out their story time. A downtown adventure! I brought no stroller… |
| May 28 | Kate | Ruby, hearing Moby on KEXP: “This music is not for dancing. Sit there and listen. Stop dancing for it and listen! Don’t dance…you listen.” |
| May 29 | Kate | Today Ruby’s a wonderland of good behavior: remembered manners, easy sharing, obedience, abundant affection. Surprised & counting blessings. |
| Jun 01 | Steve | Dinner with Ruby is hilarious when Mama and Papa are sharing a bottle of wine. Today: fork fencing, pirate jokes, and sneak licking attacks. |
| Jun 01 | Steve | When Ruby heard our fish died, she said “I’m hoping”. I told her not to hope. Today I cleaned out the pond and found 5 fish, alive, hiding. |

| Jun 03 | Kate | Out to sushi dinner w/ Ruby, actually enjoying myself. She’s now used 2 restaurants enough that she knows how to behave. Even says thankyou! |
| Jun 05 | Steve | This morning, had a fun conversation with Ruby while she tried to describe the popping-up-and-down-garden-thing. “You remember?” (sprinkler) |
| Jun 05 | Steve | Last night, Ruby and I started reading her first novel: http://snurl.com/2e53i. If that goes well, we’ll move on to the Wizard of Oz series. |
| Jun 05 | Steve | Ruby knows a joke. It’s a good one, and she tells it pretty well for a two-year-old. Ask her to tell you a joke the next time you see her. |
| Jun 06 | Kate | After reading about a badger in a book I dug up this oldie but goodie: http://is.gd/sgg Ruby LOVES it: “Someday we can go there play soccer” |
| Jun 07 | Steve | Blown away by the sight of Ruby taking to the dance floor like it was her natural home. She hopped for three hours. I am even smittener. |

| Jun 10 | Steve | Bought orange nail polish with Ruby tonight and then did a practice painting on her tiny toes. Kate is scandalized. |
| Jun 13 | Kate | Today at frisbee, Ruby saw a long throw and shouted “Up!” (just like the players usually do, although nobody did this time). She’s learning! |
| Jun 13 | Steve | All packed up for a camping trip with Kate & Ruby. Had my Dad teach Ruby essential fishing song: fishy fishy fishy, bite my hook… |
| Jun 15 | Steve | Best part of father’s day: napping in the backyard hammock while Ruby happily tootles around, watering all my tomatoes. |
| Jun 20 | Kate | I’ve created a monster… I explained matching to Ruby (re: clothes). Now she freaks out if I say she should wear brown shoes with blue! |

| Jul 06 | Kate | We’ve established that Ruby has Steve’s palate, not mine. Proof: she likes grapefruit, olives, and (from today’s lunch) hot sauce! |
| Jul 08 | Steve | Bursting with Papa Pride: today Ruby let go and swam around by herself (with noodle) like a champ; both of us grinning from ear to ear. |
| Jul 09 | Kate | At Meridian Park for at least the next hour. Nothing occupies Ruby better than sand & water combined. I’ll be reading my book & sipping tea. |
| Jul 10 | Kate | Ruby was playing with my hand this morning, and pulled on my finger. Surprised, she asked, “you don’t fart?” No, only Papa works that way. |
| Jul 11 | Kate | Great animal viewing at the zoo today, but Ruby is more interested in pushing buttons than watching the show. |
